Tucker Ford peer review[edit]

I believe you need to have a different lead section to match the criteria that Smith is wanting. Add a little detail about going to Oregon. Other than that, you did a good a job at summarizing a lot with a little! The article structure was great, I did see spelling error or two so go check back on those! The balance and the tone was neutral, and the information seemed reliable; I say seem because I did not really fact check your sources because I trust ya. Overall, I would just take time on your lead section and perfect that!

Kellie Schimleck peer review[edit]

Lead: maybe add a little more to strengthen it like "Abner Hunt Francis was an African American abolitionist and entrepreneur who fought for equality in New Jersey and Oregon. The article follows a good structure. A couple of things to check: last line of Abolitionist work section, add "of" to "state of the nation." First line of same section, change to "an agent." In the lead, change to "an African American." Article seems balanced and neutral, with reliable references. I like that it shows that he also battled against segregation laws in Oregon. Prof. Smith Feedback:

Hi Chris,

I think you're well on your way to a solid article. This is well-written, well-organized, and pretty thorough. It is also very well-sourced with reliable documentation. Here's what I would like to see you do to improve your article: - I would improve your lead in the manner that Kellie suggests above. Put a little more detail in the lead about Francis's significance and notability (civil rights activism in New Jersey and the Pacific Coast, and the first black lawmaker in British Columbia). -I would change the title "Move Out West" to something more descriptive like "West Coast Migration and Activism." - According to my records, Francis went bankrupt in Oregon before leaving for Victoria. My source is listed as the same article by Quintard Taylor that you're citing here. I would mention this. - In the Canvas inbox, I've forwarded you the link to Francis's obituary that I found in a Victoria newspaper from 1872 that has his death date and a tiny bit of information about his family. It would be great to include that in your article. - Given that Sydna Francis, his wife, did a fair amount of activism in her own right, I would like to see you at least briefly mention their marriage and her activism. You don't need to go into detail about this, but it would be helpful to acknowledge her because black women activists often get ignored. Also, why not give an external link to the house in Victoria that they owned? https://www.timescolonist.com/historic-victoria-home-belonged-to-pioneering-black-family-1.812271 - Remember that you need "See Also" and "External Links" sections to have a complete assignment. See the article template that I handed out in class, and that is posted on our Canvas homepage, for details on what to include in these sections and how to format them.
