Abe Isō → Isoo Abe – First, Western name order, with the family name first, is the norm on Wikipedia. Second, the Library of Congress romanization of his name is Isoo, not Isō. See here. Currently the main page is Abe Isō, and Isoo Abe is only a redirect page. It should be reversed. Michitaro (talk) 23:14, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles) says that names of historical Japanese persons born before 1868 (i.e. pre-Meiji) should always be written using the traditional Japanese order of Family name + Given name. Abe Isoo might be a more accurate rendering than the current Abe Isō though. --DAJF (talk) 08:29, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In the least it has to be changed to Abe Isoo (which curiously is already used in the existing article). "Isoo" is not merely "more accurate," it is the accepted and dominant form of romanization, used by the Library of Congress and others. One does not combine two vowels into a long vowel when stretched over two kanji (I learned this working for libraries). Thus it is always "Hiroo" (for place or people names like 広尾) not Hirō. It is Motoori not Motōri (本居). If the "born before Meiji" is the MOS, then so be it, but I for one find that peculiar and worthy of change. It makes more sense for it to be "primarily active before Meiji," not born before Meiji (Abe was 3 years old when Meiji started). Do we render two people's names differently because one was born in 1867 and another in 1868 even though the former, for instance, became famous after the latter?
