Sand's gender *WITHIN* the autobiography[edit]

There are a few mentions of "he" & "his" within the current copy. I know Sand wrote under a male pen name, but did she disguise herself WITHIN THIS STORY? Would an unknowing reader think that Chopin's companion was a man? I'm confused.
