"[...]some famous blacksmiths, such as Applegate-Fairbairn[...]"

Colonel Rex Applegate and William Ewart Fairbairn were not blacksmiths. They both designed the famous fighting-knife based on their experience as soldiers, police officers and close combat instructors (which is therefore commonly known as the Applegate-Fairbairn-Knife).
