This article needs updating

This article talks of ADAT as primarily a tape format, but that isn't really accurate anymore. More often now, I think ADAT refers to the digital audio transfer protocol which was originally used on these machines, and now has really become the standard for higher end digital audio interfaces (since S/PDIFF only does 2 channels). Most people who find this page are probably looking for the ADAT Lightpipe article. Rather than do much editing here, I'm just going to make that link more prominent at the top. I wonder if that even shouldn't be a redirection though, with this page possibly renamed something like ADAT (tape format)? Acerimusdux (talk) 21:01, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

High reliability??

I have owned a couple of adats and I can tell you that they are not reliable. Every studio I know has had problems with them. Anyone that has had experience knows the classic -du- error!!! These things suck. Although there may still be scientific uses and laser-light shows using the ADAT format, most are doing so simply to avoid the issues of transitioning to a new digital media. The medium is too unreliable to used on a continuous basis. Tape jams, constant cleaning and demagnetizing, drop-outs and other problems plague the format. Storage capacity?

If a ST-180 tapes hold the equivalent of 60 minutes of digital audio, how much capacity is that? If 8-track ADAT is equivalent to four 2-track CDs, does that mean the tape can hold ~700 * 4 == 2.8 gigabytes? (Seems kinda low considering D-VHS can hold 35 gig on the same tape.) ----- If the answer is known, someone should add that information to the article. - Theaveng 12:38, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Recording method

Does ADAT use linear (stationary head) or helical scan recording? I would assume the former, so tracks can be individually recorded, edited, etc. --Zilog Jones (talk) 20:39, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
