Fair use rationale for Image:Australian Broadcasting Corporation Logo Transparent.png[edit]

Image:Australian Broadcasting Corporation Logo Transparent.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Relay Stations list[edit]

The Relay Stations list is not exhaustive. There are many local area tranmitters that aren't listed, such as Lithgow, Bathurst, Cowra and such. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 166.64.1.2 (talk) 01:13, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with title[edit]

See Talk:ABT (TV station) and Talk:ABC Television (Australian TV network). There are similar issues with all of the articles in the group (listed in this section of the ABC history article). I started updating Canberra, Tasmania, South Australia, Brisbane and Western Australia, but currently out of steam (and there may well be changes that need to be applied to all of them, so don't want to waste my time). Requested move 23 April 2023[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: Not moved. (non-admin closure) EggRoll97 (talk) 03:26, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

– The ABC stations in Australia are just known as ABC Television now, which is why I had to request the move. The lead paragraph on some of the stations have already been updated, for example the Canberra station. I also want someone to move ABQ (disambiguation) to ABQ, as no ABQ, except the TV station, which doesn't use ABQ anymore, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, which are both now primary topics. I'm pinging @Happily888, to participate in this discussion and leave his opinion. Yours sincerely, TechGeek105 (his talk page) 02:54, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Weak oppose I can't seem to find any evidence that any sources have cared about these name changes (probably because of how confusing it made everything :P), so I'm opposing for now per WP:NAMECHANGE. I think it's more likely that I am simply really bad at searching for this, so if you can find some evidence that sources care about this name change and have been using the new name I will support. Snowmanonahoe (talk) 03:07, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
https://www.acma.gov.au/sites/default/files/2023-04/stations_book_electronic_edition.pdf#page155, this source confirms all of the TV stations owned by the ABC have the callsign, ABC, @Snowmanonahoe Yours sincerely, TechGeek105 (his talk page) 03:19, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TechGeek105: one source isn’t quite enough—to justify a page move it should be shown that the majority of sources since the name change have begun using the new name. Snowmanonahoe (talk) 03:51, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Even the ABC itself just uses the term ABC for their TV stations. They do not mention the old callsigns at all. Yours sincerely, TechGeek105 (his talk page) 04:57, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
According to iview, https://iview.abc.net.au/collection/live-streams, they use ABC TV [state/territory name] instead. Yours sincerely, TechGeek105 (his talk page) 04:59, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
See the second-last discussion on Talk:ABC Television (Australian TV network)/Archive 2, @Snowmanonahoe. Yours sincerely, TechGeek105 (his talk page) 05:02, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
We don’t care what ABC uses, we care what the majority of secondary sources use. Snowmanonahoe (talk) 05:24, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I found out that the majority of secondary sources don't use the call sign of the stations at all, and just use ABC. Yours sincerely, TechGeek105 (his talk page) 05:33, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I tend to agree with TechGeek - I have never heard or read these names used since I've been in Australia, which is several decades now. They are not commonly used, and IMO just serve to confuse. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 08:31, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think the same thing, and I have never heard the callsigns spoken except ABC, @Laterthanyouthink. Yours sincerely, TechGeek105 (his talk page) 09:31, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose, These were the historical names, much live ATN, GTV, HSV, TCN etc are for the Seven and Nine Networks. While they now all operate under the one brand today, they were for a long time separate. A flick through the relevant newspapers for each of the cities from the 1950s shows that these were the names actually used. Juheerere (talk) 03:01, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
After the 1950s it was just known as ABC, and still is to this day, @Juheerere. Yours sincerely, TechGeek105 (his talk page) 07:32, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose – whether there is merit in the proposal or not, the proposed names do not in any way seem to follow WP:NCBC, and indeed move away from NCBC-compliant titles to very non-standard titles. That is way too big an issue to ignore. --IJBall (contribstalk) 12:29, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Nominator comment, I support the move, but with ABC TV instead of ABC Television, as it is shorter and it is the channel brand. Yours sincerely, TechGeek105 (his talk page) 22:27, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support as "ABC TV (state)" This will come as a bolt from the blue surprise as the writer of much of the current WP:NCBC who is only learning of this RM now. However, there is a tenet about NCBC that is important. Currently operating broadcast stations, if they are to be call sign-titled, bear their current call sign. That is not feasible here because every ABC television transmitter uses the call sign ABC. Not only that, but use in Australian media absolutely collapses after a certain point. The television listings in the Sydney Morning Herald changed from an "ABN2" to an "ABC2" header on June 22, 1991. Any times when the old call letters are used are in period-specific contexts or history articles. The "in" seems unnecessary. I note that references of the kind "ABC TV (state)" are rare but do occur from time to time in my research. If this RM closes as "move", NCBC will be updated to suit. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 08:20, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It depends to an extent if the articles also refer to ABC’s satellite stations in regional Australia. For example, ABV is the official call sign for Melbourne’s station, but also in the state are ABGV etc. The regional stations used to have local opt-outs but nowadays are identical to the capital city station. The “ABV” page mentions ABGV, so “ABC Television in Victoria” would make sense. If an article is purely about the capital city station then the callsign seems apt as a title. DanielKane2013 (talk) 11:37, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@DanielKane2013 The problem is that those call signs were wiped off the book, apparently in the digital transition. See [1], per above. There is only one call sign in use by an ABC TV transmitter: ABC.
This change appears to have been implemented in the ACMA's records between October 2011 and April 2013, when only a handful of transmitters were not changed over (probably in error). Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 18:31, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I realise that. I know this conversation is about the ABC pages, but I noticed most of the pages about commercial and regional channels are still named after their callsign (which means little to most readers and viewers). However, in these cases there are variations in schedule between markets (eg. Seven Regional [known until recently as Prime7] has various sub-markets across VIC/NSW/ACT which are all branded the same but have their own local news - there needed to be a way on here of distinguishing between the various stations in a state branded as Seven/Prime7 so the callsigns were used/retained. Now, I know it’s a different situation with the ABC stations, but there does need to be some consistency across all the pages for Aussie TV channels. DanielKane2013 (talk) 04:52, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The point is that those regional stations still have separate call signs. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 18:05, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This alt. proposal is less awful than the original RM proposal, but I'm not sure I'm sold on it either. But I won't actively "oppose" this alt. proposal... --IJBall (contribstalk) 14:28, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose for consistency with other Australian network callsign name systems and because of the new callsigns all being the same; as per above, the new callsigns are only being used as a result of the digital transition. Also, ABC iview live stream titles aren't TV station callsigns, many of the TV stations don't cover the full state/territory due to region specific programming so naming by state would be inaccurate.
