How will market salary rates be assessed? I was shocked after applying for a 457 how uptight Australia is about pre-existing medical conditions. It's like as big a deal as a criminal conviction. Even if you can get it to work it's hardly worth it. Your employer has to guarantee the costs of the condition. Required upon entry?

Is the 457 Visa required before entering Australia, or may someone who has arrived as a tourist seek work and, upon obtaining a promise of employment, apply for the visa? If so, how long after the application, on average, does the process take?

For many years the process in the UK was that employers could freely hire workers, but only if they were physically outside the UK at the time. Such visas were granted freely, but very often when the workers arrived, they found the jobs had been misrepresented and that they were consigned to being chambermaids in hotels at poverty-level wages. Such employees found they did not have the money to return home. This system seems to have been copied in the Gulf, with predictably bad results.

457 System Abuse?

There are articles that suggest abuse of 457 Visa system, but this section reads more like a rant. I've marked the section POV, but we might want to remove it entirely until someone wants do to a proper writeup. Gringacho1 (talk) 05:29, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

It is doubtless a rant. But even if the language were changed, it would remain an expression of the writer's own political views that has absolutely no place in Wikipedia.

Its clear people who come here to work on 457 visas are for jobs that nearly all can be filled by people already in Australia! We are not a third world under developed country! Some the impossible jobs to fill that require foreigners to work include Turf Grower!, Caravan Park Manager!, Lic Club Manager! (interesting since theres so many lic people here who cant get a job and the foreigner would have to get the legal lic etc), Boarding Kennel Operator! Bed and Breakfast Manager! Manager often meaning the guy that looks after the place. Also a lot of jobs can be called what ever suits the business, but tradies still get to come in etc. The selling an Australians job to a foreigner still exists $50,000! Also the business visa, where a person sets up a business for 12-24 months paying family members and not having turnover to even cover the wages still exists.
