Christie "faceted" seven opponents?[edit]

I didn't want to jump in and make a poor edit at the exact moment this article hits the spotlight, however dimly lit. In case it just reflected my ignorance, I did not change faceted to faced in a sentence in the article's lead. Around the time the election result was first reported, it appeared thus:

He [Christie] faceted Democratic nominee Barbara Buono and six others in the general election.

I am pretty sure that the word should be faced. I only know one closely related set meanings of faceted (having faces or aspects), in which many-faceted is an approximate synonym of many-faced rather than a meaning of "faced many" that would have seemed more suitable here, at least for the six others. As a land-slide re-election of an incumbent against at least one poorly funded and at least six poorly supported candidates, this probably won't break the top ten most visited Wikipedia articles. But I remain curious. Was the use of faceted intentional? I have never heard of a multi-faced analogy in gubernatorial selection mechanisms, but I can never be quite sure with "you Americans" either within your unique political terminology or just with the English language in general.
