National team links[edit]

I don't think the boxscores should link to the national teams; these aren't national teams playing. Probably better to just link to each country. Check prior years' pages for format.

I didn't make any changes but wanted to know what others think.EnjoysButter (talk) 05:45, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My mistake. Definitely not national teams, and thus should not link to them. Saw the nations' names in the schedules and just automatically plugged in national teams. I've edited it to give the names of the teams which are actually playing, and included the flag of their country. Since each team does have an actual article, I think that's probably the best place to link to. That work? -- Jonel (Speak to me) 06:10, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

2009 CS edit[edit]

I made some edit to this article in order to preserve the wikistyle used in previous Caribbean Series articles.

First of all, the Caribbean Series (Serie del Caribe, in Spanish) is not an event created for national or individual baseball teams. The CS is an annual baseball postseason tournament between the champions of the Caribbean Winter Leagues, which started in 1949 and was held annually until 1960 with the champions teams of Cuba, Panama, Puerto Rico and Venezuela winter leagues. It was restarted in 1970 and has been held annually since, featuring the winners of the Dominican Republic Winter League, Mexican Pacific League, Puerto Rican Winter League, and Venezuelan Professional Baseball League. In other words, the CS is a baseball tournament created exclusively for countries members of the Confederación de Béisbol del Caribe (CBC, Caribbean Baseball Confederation) and their representing champion teams, which is affiliated with the Winter League programs of Major League Baseball, featuring major leaguers and minor leagues prospects from each country.

Thanks for your collaboration to this CS page, but please, check prior years' series articles for future edits.

The intro paragraph to this article, and the article Caribbean Series, both suggest that the Caribbean Series is played by individual baseball teams. In 2009, the teams appear to be Tigres del Licey, Venados de Mazatlán, Leones de Ponce, and Tigres de Aragua. Indeed, the Caribbean Series article tells me that Tigres del Licey has won the competition 10 times. It seems that qualification is via winning your nation's winter league, but the team that does that is the one that goes on to play in the Caribbean Series. This seems to be the same situation as, say, Manchester United getting to play in the UEFA Champions League through winning the Premier League—but we don't call that team "England" when they play in the UEFA league. If this is not the case, both this article and Caribbean Series need to be re-written. -- Jonel (Speak to me) 02:23, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The page is correct as it is. The best I can explain this is that yes, individual teams advance out of their respective leagues, but for this tournament they represent their country of origin. This is reflected in the uniforms as well, with current participants wearing the name of the country rather than the team name. So even though Leones de Ponce, for example, is playing, their shirts say "Puerto Rico" on front. -- EnjoysButter (talk) 18:27, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Correction...ignore my shirts comment. It doesn't seem to be true with all the uniforms. But the page is fine as is. That's what we're going for. -- EnjoysButter (talk) 05:45, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
