... that the 1874 Alabama gubernatorial election was the start of a winning streak for the Alabama Democrats that would remain unbroken until 1986? Source: "William Hugh Smith was the first Republican governor in state history, but he served only briefly, from 1868 until 1870, as did the second, David P. Lewis (1872-1874). Guy Hunt, the third Republican elected governor in Alabama, assumed office more than a century later in 1987."[1]
