Is Icarus Getting Closer?[edit]

Given the decreasing distances that Icarus seems to be making during it's pass-by's, Is it possible to calculate the paths of both Earth & Icarus to see whether it will impact with us in the future?

Radar spotting[edit]

General relativity[edit]

Why is Gm used here and practically nowhere else in Astronomy articles?[edit]

Icarus perihelion distance record[edit]

The article states that Icarus was the record holder for closest perihelion distance until the discovery of 2000 BD19 in 2000. This seems to be erronous since at least the asteroid 1995 CR has a perihelion distance of 0.1193 AU, which is much closer than Icarus. Should that be corrected? Edit. As the asteroid 1995 CR was only observed at the opposition in 1995 and only recently re-discovered (in 2014), I wondered if the orbital elements would have been known with the 1995 observations only. I checked that by calculating the orbit myself (using only 1995 observations), finding that the perihelion distance was known to be 0.11911 +/-0.00017, fairly accurate...Renerpho (talk) 22:45, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Good catch. 1995 CR was observed from 1995 02 03 through 1995 02 23 giving it a 20 day observation arc with many observations. But 3200 Phaethon (1983 TB) with q=0.14 upstaged 1566 Icarus before 1995 CR and 2000 BD19. -- Kheider (talk) 16:00, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
