Case length[edit]

This was posted here by me.

I have two refs for the case length on the .300 Whisper. One says 1.40" and the other says 1.50". The first one is actually a link YOU added. Do you have a reference that says 1.35"?

This link at the bottom of the page suggests that the correct OAL for the .300 Whisper should be 1.35". There is a sticky at Quarterbore's .300 Whisper forum stating that the correct length is 1.355", though at least one user of that forum has mentioned that when he trims his brass to 1.35", his crimping die doesn't work (suggesting that the die manufacturer prefers a longer case length). According to several instances in that forum, the official case length for the .300 Whisper according to SSK and J.D. Jones is 1.355". Apparently other die manufacturers (such as Redding and RCBS) make their dies to different specs (1.39"). 1.4" appears to be the correct case length for the .221 Fireball, the parent case for the .300 Whisper.

Unfortunately, I can't confirm any of this personally, but it does provide a few references to support your opponent's point of view. The (apparently incorrect) case information I originally provided came from Cartridges of the World, 8th Edition by Frank C. Barnes and M. L. McPherson, DBI Books, 1997. OAL[edit]

This is almost certainly incorrect. From what I understand, the .300 Whisper was designed to function through the AR-15 action, using existing STANAG-type magazines. Thus, the cartridge should have at least the same OAL as the .223 Remington (2.26"). Though it may not be limited to this length in other types of actions. Raygun 06:16, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That length reflects the Cartridge Overall Length, not the case length, in order to establish how deep the bullet is being seated in the case. 10:33, 16 December 2018 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.31.22.149 (talk)

WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Tag & Assess 2008[edit]

As part of the Tag & Assess 2008 project, removing the Milhist as there is no reference in this article that this round is being used by any armed force of any nation. --dashiellx (talk) 11:20, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
