Explanation of the Spelling Please[edit]

There ought to be some explanation for the spelling of the name given its oddity to anyone who is not Dutch. The apostrophe "s" preceding the name is very odd.Tmangray (talk) 18:39, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The name is derived from Des Graven Zande which was a structure on a sand bank owned by the Duke of Holland. We need a Dutch speaker to translate the name. (The best I can do is 'The Sand Graves' but I think that is incorrect.) The problem is how to pronounce the name. A similar named city 's-Hertogenbosch (the Duke's Forest) is pronounced 'Certogenboss' but is invariably known as 'Den Bosch'. Does 's-Gravenzande have a colloquial name?
