Aubrey Ghambi (born July 18, 1990), best known as Suffix, is a Malawian gospel rapper and songwriter.[1][2][3] In 2020, he won a UMP Award in best gospel act.[4] In 2018, his album titled "Before I Sleep" won the category Album of the Year in UMP Awards and he was nominated as Best Hip Hop Artist as well as Best Urban Gospel.[5][6] In 2016, was nominated for the same category and award.

In 2022, he won the Africa-Based award in artist of the Year given out by Rapzilla, the top and biggest Christian hip hop site in the world and an online magazine, beating Limoblaze, Rehmahz, Angeloh, Spillz-Ochai and Drakare in the category.[7]

His song "D.Y.M" was featured on Christian Hip Hop (Rapzilla), the world's largest online magazine .[4]

In 2016, he was a brand ambassador for Hip-Hop Online Magazine's Cancer Awareness Campaign.[8][9][10]

Early life[edit]

Ghambi was born on 18 July 1990, in Lilongwe. His home village is Mzuzu and is a Tumbuka by tribe. He did his primary school in Mzuzu as well as his secondary school education.[11]

Music career[edit]

Ghambi began singing in early 2000s but got wide attention in 2010 after he released several singles. He released one mixtape titled D.O.S, as well as one new EP titled Dethrone, and several hit singles including Ulendo Wa Kumwamba (Journey to Heaven), Necessary Noise, D.Y.M, Mkazi Wa Kumwamba (A woman of Heaven) and Ndinakakhala Judge (If I was a judge). Mkazi Wa Kumwamba saw over 75,000 downloads in two weeks on Malawi's official media website.[12][13]

Ghambi got national recognition in Malawi after he released his single Ulendo Wa Kumwamba which saw over 60, 000 downloads on Malawi's official media website in the first week.[14][15]

Ghambi has collaborated are with various gospel artists in Africa such as Lilly Million (South Africa), Ruyonga (Uganda), Limoblaze (Nigeria), and Abel Chungu (Zambia), as well as Malawi's Faith Mussa.[16][17]

In 2022, as the winner of the Africa-Based award given by Rapzilla, the award came a few months after Ghambi had released his album titled To Whoever It May Concern.[2] The album had 15 tracks with songs such as Story, The statement, Neighbour, Nkhondo ndi anansi, Kale, Mr Suffie, Palibenso (There's none), Bwanji, As I grow older, Ngati dolo (as a star), Mesenjala, Sat Bally, Unali Kuti (where were you), Happy, and Nkhondo ndi Anansi II.[7][18]

Ghambi had shared stages with world's famous worship leader Don Moen, and several other artists from around the world. In 2017, his was nominated again but in Best Live Act for the same award along other artists such as Faith Mussa, Gwamba, Tay Grin and Fredokiss.[19]

Controversies[edit]

In May 2018, Ghambi acted furiously over the illegal distribution and copying of his new album titled Before I Sleep.[20][21]

In 2017, he was accused of stealing in church to which he dismissed the accusations.[22]
