New Stage is the fifth studio album by American recording artist Jesse McCartney. This album marks his return to music after his previous album In Technicolor released in 2014. Before the release of this album, McCartney released a live album, The Resolution Tour Live, which contained one unreleased song from the album, as a teaser of what fans could expect from his upcoming album.

Background[edit]

"It sums it up. It certainly feels like I turned a corner the last few years. In my personal life and professional life. I’m very comfortable with who I am as a man and as a person I’ve learned so much over the course of 17/18-plus years doing this. It feels like I’m in a place of gratitude and certainly romance and it felt like a good way of saying, I’m in a new chapter or I’m in a new stage of my life. It has the double entendre of actually being on a stage."

 — McCartney, on the album.[1]

In 2021, McCartney announced that he was releasing a new studio album titled New Stage[2] The first single from the album, "Yours" was released on April 10, 2020. While fans who attended his Better With U.S Tour and The Resolution Tour fans were able to hear songs from his then unknown album, such as Selfish, Soul, and What Happens Next.[3]

In an interview McCartney stated that he recorded this album right before the pandemic, and how his life had changed during that time.[4]

In another interview, McCartney states that the album title and theme came to him in mainly due to his then fiancé Katie Peterson, where she is the main subject for all eleven songs on the album.[5]

Release and Promotion[edit]

New Stage was originally planned to be released in early 2020 and tour with the album during the summer, then take time off to focus on his wedding, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, both had to be pushed back to the following year.[6] Since everything had to be pushed back, the album release date and coincidently his wedding day ended up on the same day.[7]

On April 25, 2020 McCartney performed his single "Yours" for the Elvis Duran's Stay At Home Ball.[8] The following year McCartney released the album cover and album title on his Instagram account with the caption "my 5th Studio Album. “New Stage” 10|8|21"[9]
