English: The Balance of Justice (caricature)

The Balance of Justice. Coloured etching. Hanging scene in which the weight of thirteen mutinous sailors is countered on a balance by the dead Joseph Wall, Governor of Goree, finally convicted for a murder committed in 1782.[1] The cartoon of 1802 comments in a veiled way that Wall's life as an officer was equal to 13 mutinous sailors, a comparison of the punishments dealt out for the Nore mutiny.[2]
