Das Schaf gehörte im alten China zu jedem guten Haushalt dazu. Als Haustier war es aufgrund seiner Gehorsamkeit besonders beliebt. Zudem blökt das Schaf immer gleich, egal ob es gut oder schlecht behandelt wird. Diese Eigenschaft, gutherzig zu reagieren, egal ob man gut oder schlecht behandelt wird, umschrieben die Chinesen mit 善.
