Varela played in the White Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Florida Marlins organizations from 2002 through 2006.[3] Varela joined the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in 2008.[3] He served as a coach for the GCL Pirates (2008), West Virginia Power (2009, 2010, and 2012), State College Spikes (2011), and Bradenton Marauders (2013).[4] He served as the manager of the Bristol Pirates from 2014 through 2016.[5][6] He then served as the Pirates Latin American hitting coordinator in 2017.[3]

Varela was hired by the Minnesota Twins as their minor league field coordinator, spending the 2018 and 2019 seasons in that role.[7]

On November 25, 2019, Varela was named the hitting coach for the Twins.[8][3] On October 6, 2021, Varela was reassigned to a minor league role and removed from the major league staff.[9]
