Draft:Vlatka Horvat

Vlatka Horvat (1974, Čakovec, Yugoslavia) is an artist working across a wide range of interdisciplinary forms, including sculpture, installation, drawing, collage and photography, as well as performance, video, writing, and publishing under Unstable Object, an imprint Horvat co-founded with artist Tim Etchells. Born in Croatia when it was part of Yugoslavia, she moved to the US as a teenager and spent twenty years there. She currently lives in London.

Horvat has exhibited at institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb, Kunsthalle Wien, Hessel Museum – Bard Center for Curatorial Studies, MoMA PS1, and London's PEER, where she debuted her artist book To See Stars Over the Mountains (Peer, Unstable Object, 2022). Horvat's work has been included in the Croatian Pavilion at the Biennale Architettura in Venice 2018, the Aichi Triennale (with Tim Etchells) in Nagoya, and the 11th Istanbul Biennale. Her performances have been commissioned by venues including HAU Hebbel am Ufer, LIFT – London International Festival of Theatre, Kaaitheater, Fondation Cartier in Paris, and many others.

In 2024, Horvat was tapped to represent Croatia at the 60th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia. By the Means at Hand takes a unique approach to the national pavilion model, staging a group exhibition that activates the largely improvised social and logistical frameworks of those living in diaspora. For the project, the artist solicited artists living in diaspora all over the world to engage in a series of reciprocal exchanges of artworks and other materials, all of which are carried between Venice and other places by improvised means – via various friends, travelers, and strangers enlisted as informal couriers for the project.
