The Prophecy is the eighth studio album by American musical comedy duo Ninja Sex Party, released on October 16, 2020.[1] Following their third cover album, it marks their return to original and comedy-oriented material since Cool Patrol in 2018.
It is their second original album with producer and co-songwriter Jim Roach, and their second original album to feature Tupper Ware Remix Party as backup band It is also the first of four albums that were released during the Covid-19 pandemic. Upon release the album reached No. 1 on Billboard's Top Comedy Albums, and stayed on the charts for six weeks.[2]
Songwriting and Production[edit]
The Prophecy marked the bands return to original music after their widely sucessful Cool Patrol album. As with their previous album, Dan Avidan and Brian Wecht included their producer Jim Roach to help write eight of the twelve tracks on the album; "The Mystic Crystal" was released on November 25, 2019, making it the first single of then untitled album.[3] The song has become their longest track to date reaching almost 12 minutes. When asked about their creativity on the album by High Times, Avidan said "...we just tried to do things differently than before, like making everything bigger and accomplishing a lot of things instrumentally that we wouldn't have been able to do until we had a full band behind us. Every song is kind of its own story."[4]
The Decision Part 2: Ten Years Later was released on December 14, 2019 a music video celebrating the band's 10 year anniversary and acting as a sequel to "The Decision", Ninja Sex Party's second-ever song originally released on December 14, 2009; the video also revealed the title of their next original album, The Prophecy.[5][6] The music video also had clips from their previous music videos; including "Everybody Wants To Rule The World"[7], "Cool Patrol"[8], "Objects of Desire"[9], "Road Trip"[10], "Three Minutes of Ecstasy"[11], "Why I Cry"[12], "Unicorn Wizard"[13], "If We Were Gay"[14], "NoReason Boner"[15], and many others.
I Don't Know What We're Talking About was released on April 1, 2020[16]
On September 28, The Prophecy was officially announced for an October 16 release,[17] with the videos for lead singles "Thunder & Lightning", "Wondering Tonight" and "It's Bedtime" each being released respectively on October 2, 9 and 16. The album debuted at #1 on Billboard's Comedy Albums chart.[18]
Critical reception[edit]
The Reflector stated ""The Prophecy" is a leap back in time to the ballad era of the 80s with its abundance of synthesizers, powerful instrumentals and vocal tracks layered over vocal tracks. But make no mistake, this is no ordinary 80s-inspired album. Rather, Ninja Sex Party's "The Prophecy" is actually a masterclass in musical comedy. For their eighth album — and fifth original album — NSP has demonstrated their growth in maturity and musical prowess with a collection of songs that are nonstop entertainment."[19]
Maneater stated "Each song is unique, entertaining and manages to keep people dancing and singing along all the way through. In a time where there is so much uncertainty and stress in the world, it's nice to have something fun to keep up good spirits."[20]
Tenth Anniversary Concert[edit]
On October 12, 2019, Ninja Sex Party performed a one night only show at the Credit Union 1 Arena in Chicago, Ilinois.[21] The concert included Tupper Ware Remix Party as backup band and as their opening act.[22][23][24]
