Draft:The Fact of Fano

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Geez and an Amharic word “ፋኖ” which has a meaning of a person who marched to a battle is called Fano or Zemach. And throughout some historical events the term Fano changed to a meaning of Young Warrior. It can be used as a singular and plural form. Now it is described as militia groups to the people of the Amhara particularly, but initially it was a whole name to express young Ethiopian freedom fighters in general.

Background History

During the first Ethio-Italian war at Adwa in 1896, the Ethiopian warriors were organized by the then Ethiopian leader, Emperor Menelik II, different government officials, war generals, regional consulates, patriots, ancient fathers and mothers. The fighters were formal army forces even if the weapons were traditional swords, spears and shields. However, during the second Ethio-Fascist Italian war which was held between 1935 - 1941, the fighters were informal army groups from different region parts of Ethiopia especially they were young peoples. Meanwhile the king, Haile Selassie I fled to Great Britain, there were many notable fighters by then for example Ras Emiru, Patriarch Abune Petros, Ras Abebe Aregay, Abdisa Aga, Belay Zeleke, Sindu Gebru, Umer Semetir, Ras Ali Mirah, Moges Asgedom, Abraha Deboch, Jagama Kello, Ejigu Zeleke, Dejazmach Geresu Duki and many more who took the responsibility to keep the sovereignty of the country from the conquerors. Those society leaders and bravery men were fighting the enemies without any formal political administration and saved Ethiopia to be an independent country all the time. That story were the beginning of the Fano, the informal militia groups in the history of Ethiopia.

The Current Fano History

Several years later in the late 2010’s young freedom fighters who rose up from the Amhara people against the earlier government, EPRDF, called themselves as Fano while other ethnic groups called themselves as Qerro, Zerma, Tegaru, Shenne, Yelagga, and extra.

The current Fano, militia groups had shown their existence highly during the civil war between the government and the alliance of Tigray Front in 2020. By accident the Northern Ethiopian Federal Military Base was attacked by its own citizens in the northern Ethiopia and many Ethiopian peoples rose up aggressively against the Tigray Front. During this time Fano had supported the government and the Ethiopian Federal Defense Force. That was the significant day for Fano for its popularity in the country. The war ended by unclear disputes from the two sides and more or less there was a big loss on the Tigray Front but it was not the end story for Fano.

Cease fire reconciliation among the Federal government and the Tigray Front at Durban, South Africa in 2022 had brought another hot issue between the people of Ethiopia itself and the federal government officials. Even before that the government has released some highly wanted criminal and giant politicians of the TPLF from prisons. This case was a big reason to make doubt on the current government and on the Prosperity Party leaders at the same time.

Unfortunately, without any convincing reason, the political tragedy changed drastically to the bad fate of Fano, the Amhara Special Force and even to the people itself. The blatant confusion started in the parliament officially to attack these groups unless they lie down their weapons. Even before that, there was high brutal genocide on the Amhara people in the history of Ethiopia for about five years though these ethnic groups were sided with the government. Their killers were from different region parts of Ethiopia. There was no well defined reason why these innocent people were under massacre. And the government denied and tortured them again.

The Character of Fano

The peoples are lovers of their country. They are fighters by their nature but they know how to manage and handle weapons for centuries. They are neither racists nor extremists. Simply to say they stand for humanity even not for their race for several years. As a matter of fact they have high interest to see One Ethiopia instead of an ethnic based regional division which is not applied in a single world country.

This historical process and culture made Fano or the militia groups to rise up to defend as one people and as one nation which represent the Amhara victims and unsecured people front. Other Ethiopian ethnic groups have also condemned and criticized this biased governmental political decision which is done on the Amhara peoples. There is no conflict against its native peoples at all even others have committed injustice on them, displaced them and persecuted them in thousand numbers from their residence places.

The Supporters of Fano

Hence the so called informal army group or the militias stood together to fight against the federal government and have gotten worldwide popularity on the mainstream media and on social media. Now the Fano movement has some global figure among diplomats of different countries. The rest people of Ethiopia understood the fault of the government and they give recognition for Fano and its safe political challenge in advance. The war is taking place in all the Amhara region but the group as well as the people are taking more power than the government force. The government called them extremists but the fighters and the rebel leaders are not acting like killers. This winning mentality and good military ethics encourage them to continue fighting for the existence of their identity until there will be governmental change. Fano doesn’t make wrong action on its country.

Under Fano there are not only fighters but also there are many social activists, famous journalists, political analysts, business men, writers, singers, film actors, poets, diaspora supporters, cyber warriors, even some federal army generals and soldiers are siding with them because the Truth is possessed by Fano and its supporters.***
