Development[edit]

The project revived a straight to series order from Showtime in February 2023. It is based on The Bureau a French espionage show created, directed and produced by Eric Rochant. [2]

The series is produced by George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures, MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios. It is executive produced by Keith Cox and Nina L. Diaz of MTVE Studios, David Glasser, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin and Bob Yari of 101 Studios, Alex Berger for The Originals Productions, and Ashley Stern and Pascal Breton for Federation Studios/Federation Entertainment of America.[3]

Joe Wright is the directer of the first two episode from a screenplay by Jez and John-Henry Butterworth.[4] George Clooney was also reportedly set to direct.[5]

Casting[edit]

In February 2024, Michael Fassbender was reported to be in talks for the lead role played in the French series by Mathieu Kassovitz.[6]

Filming[edit]

Filming is expected to take place in London in the spring of 2024.[7]

Broadcast[edit]

The Department will premiere on Paramount+ with Showtime in late 2024.[8]
