The Space Team Aachen is a student initiative at the RWTH Aachen and the FH Aachen, which is developing and constructing rockets, satellites and rovers. The Space Team Aachen participates in national and international competitions and events.

The Space Team Aachen has been working closely with various companies from the private sector and institutes of the RWTH Aachen University, including DLR, ILT and ITA.

Since 2023 the Space Team Aachen is part of the BVSR.[1]

In 2020 the Space Team Aachen started the developing of a hybrid rocket engine for the 2024 DLR Stern challenge in cooperation with the DLR.

Space Team Aachen participated in the first EuRoC in 2020 with its first competition rocket. The first supersonic rocket was originally scheduled to launch at EuRoC in 2022.[2] This flight was postponed to the Spaceport America Cup in June 2023.

Projects[edit]

STAHR[edit]

STAHR (Space Team Aachen Hybrid Rocket) is the first hybrid rocket developed by Space Team Aachen within the DLR STERN program. STAHR is scheduled for launch in late 2024 from Esrange using an in-house developed hybrid engine, reaching an altitude of more than 10 km with a thrust of more than 3 kN.

The engine is being developed in cooperation with the Institute of Space Propulsion in Lampoldshausen. In addition to the engine, the STAHR team is also developing the recovery system, the structure, the electronics and the ground support equipment (GSE) itself.

Aquila / Aquila Maris[edit]

Aquila is the first supersonic Rocket and was first launched at the Spaceport America Cup 2023. The further development of Aquila, Aquila Maris, is scheduled for launch in May 2024 in partnership with the German Offshore Spaceport Alliance (GOSA).[3]

CARL / CARL II[edit]

The first competiton Rocket of the Space Team Aachen was CARL. The development of the rocket started in late 2019 and was launched at the EuRoC 2020. The launch of CARL II took place at the EuRoC 2021.[4][5]
