The Schweitzer Institute for Environmental Ethics (also known as The Schweitzer Institute or The Albert Schweitzer Institute)[1] is a non-profit organisation that explores the interaction between ecological values, such as sustainability, and the human domination of nature—or ‘what it means for humans to live in right relationship with Earth's life-systems’ (Benedict Rattigan, Director).[2]
The Institute is committed to introducing Albert Schweitzer’s philosophy of 'reverence for life’ to a broad audience in order to bring about a more civil and ethical human society characterized by respect, responsibility, compassion and service.[3] It does so by forming partnerships with like-minded organisations,[4] organising conferences and publishing an open-access peer-reviewed journal,[5] publishing books[6] and conducting local, national and international programs that link education, ethics, and voluntarism for the sake of creating a more peaceful and sustainable world.[7]
The Institute is affiliated with Peterhouse, University of Cambridge,[8] Chapman University in California[9] and Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut.[10]
The Schweitzer Institute holds consultative status with United Nations[11][12]
