The R268 is a proposed new technology New York City Subway car type. First being mentioned under the MTA's Non-Construction Contract Solicitation Notice document back in June of 2023, it is slated to replace the R68 and R68A fleets, built in the late 1980s. It was briefly mentioned in a contract in 2023 with the R262. The contract of the R268 would be awarded in the late-2020s. This model would have more futuristic and advanced technology similar to the current R211. Like the R211Ts and R262s, it will have open gangways.
