Nick Quan (born 2005.[1]), professionally known as Quannnic (often stylised in all lowercase) is an American musician and producer.
Career[edit]
Quannnic currently resides in Florida, being signed to DeadAir Records, who notably have signed similar artists such as Jane Remover and Quadeca. Already having been playing guitar guitar since the age of six, they started self-producing music in 2020, mainly encompassing the subgenre of digicore. Quannnic told Eli Enis of Stereogum in December 2023 “I think it was really cool that people my age were making something new, and I wanted to be a part of that[2].
They began publishing music in 2021, with their first single "Everlong" being released on January 14 of that year. Their first studio album, Kenopsia, released on February 18, 2022, became what DeadAir described as their 'cult-classic debut', as the single "Life Imitates Life" trended on social media such as TikTok, with the song receiving over 20 million views, and the official music video on YouTube gained over a million views. The track charted #10 on Spotify's Viral Songs USA on April 18th 2023[3]. Life Imitates Life, along with other songs from Kenopsia including "Snarky" and "Stick", have also been played on NTS Radio.
On August 12, 2023, Quannnic's single "Comatose" charted #12 in Egypt on iTunes. On August 18, 2023, after its release, Spotify highlighted Quannnic as the cover of the 'Shoegaze Now' playlist.
On October 9, 2023, it was revealed that Quannnic is on the line-up for the Sick New World 2024 festival (being headlined by System of a Down at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds in Winchester, Nevada. On October 31st, 2023, Jane Remover, who is also signed to DeadAir, announced the 2024 Designated Dreams Tour alongside Quannnic, named after Remover's 2023 album Census Designated and Quannnic's then-upcoming album Stepdream.
On the 8th of November, 2023, Life Imitates Life debuted on the Billboard chart at #23 on 'Hot Hard Rock Songs'[4]. Two days later, on the 10th of November, 2023, Quannnic's sophomore album Stepdream was released, alongside a music video for the track 'Rummage', featuring Julian Koster's Orbiting Human Circus. Jordan Darville of The Fader described the album as what feels like a concerted effort to highlight Quannnic's abilities as a songwriter of brooding guitar-based jams[5]. Abby Kenna of Ones To Watch published an article on the album, noting quannnic refines their unique perspective, blending their influences that reach from metal to folk while keeping their voice and emotional turmoil consistent'[6].
In a December 2023 interview, looking back on the track's rise to fame through TikTok, Quannnic told Eli Enis of Stereogum “It was just really weird to me that something I made when I was 16 could get this much attention now. It impacted the way I make music. It got a lot more stressful.”[7]
