Draft:Name assimilation in Albania

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Name assimilation is a term used by Albanian nationalists to refer to Albanians who choose to give their children non-Albanian names.

History[edit]

When Albania became the first State Atheism, Albanians were forced to name their children Albanian names, and not religious names of different countries of origin (Arabic, Greek, Italian, etc). People were named purely Albanian names, with no religious or foreign backgrounds until the fall of communism in Albania.

After that event, people out of spite, named their children or even changed their names to religious names, usually of Arabic origin. Foreign names (usually American) became popular, and people started to name their children American names (Robert, William, etc). This has caused people to be still named "foreign" names, to this day, even though people are still usually named with Albanian names. In 2020 until today, Albanians "recognized" their descent from Illyrians, and started to name their children with Illyrian names (Teuta, Taulanti).
