The Maore of Mawuti Sultanate was established on the island of Mayotte around 1500 by an unknown sultan.[citation needed] The Sultanate made first contact with Europeans in 1503 when Portuguese explorers charted Mayotte. The Sultanate existed for around 300 years until in 1832, it was conquered by Andriantsoly, a former king of Iboina on Madagascar. The Island was later conqered in 1833 by Mwali (Mohéli) and in 1835 by Ndzuwani (Anjouan). After this the sultanate's independence was reestablished. until 1841 when it was annexed by France[1].
