Mr.Gold is a character from the Lego Collectible Minifigures series. He is made of chrome gold pieces except for his white hands and the diamond-shaped piece on his staff, which is clear.[1] The printing on his gold torso piece depicts a suit,[2] and the printing on his face features a Monocle.

Overview[edit]

Mr. Gold was released in 2013 as part of the collectible minifigures series 10 set. The series officially had 16 characters, and Mr. Gold was not counted in that 16. Only 5,000 Mr. Gold figures were produced worldwide,[3] and it is unknown how many are currently accounted for. The figures were randomly placed into cases of 60 and 30 figures and then shipped out worldwide.[4] If lucky enough to find a Mr. Gold, upon opening the pack, one would find the parts to the figure sealed in a secondary inner clear plastic bag[5] and a leaflet that acted as a certificate of authenticity that had a number out of 5,000 and a code to register the Mr. Gold on Lego's website.[6]

Finding[edit]

Lego essentially created a lottery with the Mr. Gold figure. Since the collectible minifigures series comes in blind bags, you do not know which figure you are getting. With the desire to find Mr. Gold, people purchased series 10 packs non-stop. However, two methods were discovered to find Mr. Gold other than luck.

The first and least popular method was the bump code method. It was discovered that on the bottom of each blind bag, there were a series of small round indentations in the foil pack to indicate which figure was inside the bag. This method was never proved to be very successful, and many people chose the second method to find Mr. Gold.

The second method is the feel method.[7] This method is still used to this day by enthusiasts to determine which character is in the blind bag to avoid purchasing duplicate figures. The method was straightforward; you would feel through the foil packs for certain parts each character had. The parts that people would feel for while searching for Mr. Gold were his staff and top hat since they were distinct. This tactic was being practiced worldwide when Series 10 was on the shelves. There are videos of Lego fans standing around the Series 10 displays at various stores, feeling the packs to find Mr. Gold. Several success stories are documented across the internet where people found Mr. Gold (or several) using this method. There are also many cases of individuals spending hours feeling packs with no luck ever coming their way.

Value[edit]

Right after the release of series 10 and Mr. Gold, the rare figure began popping up for sale on sites such as eBay and Bricklink for hundreds of US dollars. As time passed, the figure became even more desired and rare as collectors began to hold onto them. As of 2023, Mr. Gold figures have been seen to sell for $5,000 or more if still sealed and with the certificate.

Controversey[edit]

Two notable controversies have come from the Mr. Gold figure. Right when the Series was released, it was discovered that employees of the retail stores where the packs were being sold were feeling up the packs for Mr. Gold before putting them out for sale on the shelves.

More controversy arose as Lego realized that the figure caused people to gamble by purchasing large packs and even creating counterfeit reproductions.[8] Eventually, Lego removed any and all mentions of Mr. Gold on their website.
