  • Comment: All the news articles published about Zagorc seems to only mention the fact that he composed the world's first tamburitza opera and nothine else, giving us very little information to write an article about Zagorc.

Gregor Zagorc (born July 18, 1985) is a Slovenian composer and conductor.

He is best known for composing the world's first tamburitza opera[1] "Ambrož and Katarina".[2] The opera premiered on 29th of December 2019[3] in Culture Center Semič, performed by "Dobreč Tamburitza Orchestra".[4]

The opera is based on the folk traditions of Bela Krajina region of Slovenia. This opera can also be classified as ethno-opera according to the libreto author, Nina Novak Oiseau.[5] The story is set in the 17th century and is based on the forbidden love between the farmer Ambrož and the Count's daughter Katarina, who's hand in marriage has already been promised to the rich and self-centered Vid Panjan.[6]

For more than 10 years, Zagorc conducted "Dobreč Tamburitza Orchestra", which was voted world’s best tamburitza orchestra at the "Tamburica Fest" in Novi Sad in 2021. Zagorc is currently the conductor of one of Slovenia's oldest orchestras "Metlika Town Band", which was founded in 1850.

In 2017[7] Gregor Zagorc was awarded Slovenian "Person of The Year" award. [8]
