Grand Cadaver is a Swedish death metal supergroup from Gothenburg, Stockholm and Falun, Sweden, formed in 2020.[1] The band has released two full-length albums, one EP and two seven inch singles. The group consists of Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquillity, The Halo Effect), Christian Jansson (Dark Tranquillity), Stefan Lagegren (ex-Tiamat/Treblinka), Daniel Liljekvist (ex-Katatonia) and Alex Stjernfeldt (Novarupa, CHILD).
History[edit]
The band formed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020[2] when Alex Stjernfeldt and Daniel Liljekvist decided to start an old-school death metal band, and invited Alex's old band colleagues Stefan Lagergren and Christian Jansson, as well as his neighbour Mikael Stanne.
The five members met for the first time in the recording studio Welfare Sounds in Gothenburg, Sweden, when beginning to record the EP "Madness Comes". The EP was the only project planned for the band, as a side project when all tours were on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During an interview, the band publicly stated that the ought to record a full-length album, since the EP had been so well received and the members enjoyed the easy-going recording process. "Into The Maw of Death", the debut album, was recorded in mere six days. The album was awarded "Best Metal" at the 2022 Manifest awards.[3]
Grand Cadaver's first live appearance took place in Gothenburg in 2021, followed by a tour with At The Gates later the same year.
When the COVID-19 pandemic subsided, and the member's full time bands were again touring, the recording pace was slowed (both the EP and debut album were recorded the same year), but the band managed to write and record the follow-up album "Deities of Deathlike Sleep" in 2022.[4]
