gg sans is a sans-serif typeface created by Colophon Foundry for use by Discord in its branding and user interface since 2022.[1]
History[edit]
On November 29, 2022, Discord announced via a support article[1] that it had introduced its first custom, proprietary typeface, gg sans, and it would be rolled out across its website and app starting on December 1, 2022, replacing its previous typeface, Whitney, which had been used on the platform since its launch in 2015. The typeface's name references the .gg top-level domain and the slang term used in gaming. According to Discord, the typeface allows the company to continuously improve it, as Whitney was not under Discord's control.
Following the typeface's rollout on December 1, 2022, many users criticized the changes, citing lack of readability; while others asked that the changes be reverted.[2]
In June 2023, Greek and Cyrillic support was added. [citation needed]
