The Friedrich Gerstäcker Prize[1][2][3][4] is Germany's oldest prize for YA literature. It was founded in 1947 by the city of Braunschweig and named after German travel writer, novelist, and adventurer Friedrich Gerstäcker (1816 to 1872). The prize is awarded bi-annually to a living writer "to recognize linguistically sophisticated works that promote to young adults tolerance, cosmopolitanism, and openness towards the traditions, beliefs, and values of other cultures."[5]
