Debra Ann Pross c. 1958 was hired as the first female firefighter in the Milwaukee Fire Department.

Debra Pross was born c. 1958.[1]

Career[edit]

in 1982 Pross graduated from the Fire Academy.[2] In 1983 Pross was hired as the first female Milwaukee firefighter.[3][4]

In a 1983 Associated Press article Pross stated that the training was "tough, real tough... I told myself I wasn't going to quit." After the ten week training course Pross and a male candidate failed to meet certain standards and both were given a four week extension. Beginning in 1978 there were 23 women who attended the academy but Pross was the first to graduate as a firefighter.[1]

Personal life[edit]

Debra Pross was married to a a Milwaukee bartender named Jeffry Pross.[1]
