Clan Rattray Society, USA originated in 2008, and is a group where people gather to learn about ancestry, history of the clan society, culture of our Scottish roots and to read the latest information about our heritage.

Clan Rattray, U.S.A. is created under the following premises:

To promote learning;

To memorialize history, language, culture and genetic genealogythrough the Rattray, Scotland Family Tree DNA project[1] and a Clan Rattray Society, U.S.A. Ancestry dot com group project[2]

To collect, preserve and store historical records and documents legally under the U.S. Trademark;

To have a U.S. domain and activities carried out via website including the sharing of information and updates regarding the specific ethnic culture/community;[3]

To publish an online journal related to the interests of your community.

Clan Rattray Society™ U.S.A. has an application for trademark in the United States,[4]

Earliest Beginning’s of Clan Rattray USA

Craighall Castle is the seat of the last 28 Chief’s of Clan Rattray from approximately the 1500’s until around 2010.[5]. Located in the lush Perthshire woods, perched 300 feet above the River Ericht. This estate is the main location the Rattray’s have met for centuries. Still an opulent setting for the eye to see.

Clan Rattray were Picts in the earliest of times, who after approximately 900 A.D. had combined together to form Clan Rattray after being awarded a title under Malcolm, King of Scotland for valor in battle.[6]

The Clan was known to be Catholic in faith who acquiesced to the Episcopalian Faith during the Reformation period, Staunch Jacobites and due to these two distinctive traits, led to the Rattray’s dispersing across the globe. A very Notable Rattray is Episcopalian Reverend, Dr. Thomas Rattray, The Bishop of Dunkeld and Primus of Scotland.[7]

Relocating to the United States from Scotland

Many Rattray’s changed their names, or had their names anglicized when relocating to the U.S.A. Such as, but not limited to Rattray, Ratterree, Ratrief, Ratrie, and Rattary.

Notable Rattray’s in the United States

Tyla Rattray Tyla Rattray, b.12 November 1985 in Durban, South Africa and currently resides in Florida, U.S.A. He is a world champion in Motocross (2008) and currently is a team trainer.[8]

Benjamin Rattray Benjamin “Ben” Rattray, b. 16 June 1980 in Santa Barbara, California and now resides in San Francisco, California is the founder and CEO of Change dot Org.

Frank Rattray Lillie Frank Rattray Lillie, b.1870-1947 was a world renowned scientist of embryology who massively contributed to the Embryo Project. Due to his life long work and love of embryology, biology was first science that Americans became internationally recognized.[9]

Devin D. Rattray American Actor, b. 11 January 1977, known for the movies Home Alone in which he was “Buzz McAlister, and T.V. Better Call Saul.

Matthew Rattray Matthew Rattray was born and trained as a fancy weaver in Paisley, Scotland; who immigrated to America to work in Indiana. Rattray advertised extensively about his New York-made Jacquard machine, his ability to design and replicate patterns, and his proficiency at Figured and Fancy carpets, coverlets, and other fancy goods. He is the ancestral great grandfather to Ben Rattray mentioned above.[10]
