Cassie Fox (born Cassandra Birmingham) is a British songwriter, musician, promoter and educator, best known as the founder of the Loud Women organisation and festival. Fox is also vocalist and bassist of the self-proclaimed "kitchenpop/mummycore band" I, Doris, and previously played keys with socialist RnB band Thee Faction.

Career[edit]

Loud Women[edit]

Fox founded the not-for-profit Loud Women organisation in October 2015 to address sexual inequality in the grassroots music scene. In 2019, Joyzine quoted her in an interview saying

"I was feeling frustrated at the amount of 'man-band'heavy' lineups all the time, and macho crowds. I was particularly tired of my all-female band always being the token women on the bill, and wanted to put on a fundraising gig with my friends' bands that could be relaxed and inclusive and fun".[1]

Initially solely a London-based promoter of DIY gigs for female and non-binary musicians, Loud Women activity now also includes a music blog, a record label, a podcast, a radio show, an annual festival, and the annual Hercury Awards.

In a Kerrang! interview, musician Janey Starling said of Fox "We've been encouraging women and non-binary people to form bands, and she's very much created the infrastructure and support to make it a reality."[2]

Reclaim These Streets (single)[edit]

In May 2021, Loud Women released a charity single, "Reclaim These Streets", written by Fox with additional lyrics performed by Brix Smith, to raise awareness of violence against women, following the eponymous campaign protesting the death of Sarah Everard. All profits from the sale of the track went to Women's Aid. The recording featured over sixty vocalists and musicians including I, Doris. The song reached #3 in the iTunes alternative chart.[3][4]

I, Doris[edit]

Fox formed I, Doris in 2018 with her former Thee Faction bandmate Lucy Morgan. The concept of the band is that all members are referred to as "Doris", and are known for their stage outfits of red workwear tabbards emblazoned with their moniker. An ever-growing collective of members includes Vic Workman, Louisa Edwards-Knight, Abby Werth and Ciaran McNamee.[5]

In an interview with LDN Magazine, Fox explained the name of the band, and the feminist message behind it:

"'Doris' is...you know, like Australians will refer to women as 'Sheilas'? It's sometimes a dismissive thing so we're reclaiming that name, and the idea that as you get a bit older, you start to disappear."[6]

The band's single "The Girl From Clapham" is a retelling of Squeeze's "Up the Junction" from the female protagonist's perspective, with lyrics by poet Janine Booth.[7]

Other projects[edit]

Fox lectures at BIMM University[citation needed]
