From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bull Hotel, Hindley was situated on Castle Hill Road. The building was erected on or around the 9th or 10th day of March in 1805. In 2023 the property is now three residential houses.

The building was initially intended to be used for a private residence in which five gentlemen resided. Joseph Bevan, William Roper, x, x, x. Somewhere between 1805 and 1869 it was turned into a Public House with Hannah Gidlow being on The Wigan Directory of 1869.[1] Although the earliest date found on record H. Gidlow may not be the first person to necessarily reside in or own the property.

In 1881 according to The Wigan Directory of 1881,[2] Wm (William) Topping was known to be on the directory for the Bull Hotel although the address of this is 129 Castle Hill Road. For this reason it is believed that Mr Topping owned the building but resided at his home address of 129 Castle Hill Road.

Later in 1936, privately referenced on the deeds of the current owner (as of 2023), this was still a Public House under the name Mary Pilkington and part Richard .W Pilkington. Up until her death in 1945, the premises was descended to her part R.W Pilkington who then later went on to sell the Bull Hotel.

In 1945 the land on which 137 Castle Hill Road (Bull Hotel, Hindley) was later changed to form 137 Castle Hill Road and 139 Castle Hill Road. This meaning that the Public House was now extinct and became two residential properties, for the first time since 1805.

Privately referenced by the current owners deeds, a lady called Emma Thorley bought the land for a sum of (x). In late 1945 Equating to around (x) in 2023. Later that year adding her part Henry Busby to the property ownership.
