Anusha Shah is a civil engineer who was elected the 159th President of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the third women and first person of colour to hold the position, succeeding Keith Howells and taking office in November 2023.[1] [2]

Early career[edit]

Shah grew up in Kashmir.[2] Shah studied civil engineering at Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi, India.[3] In 1999, after winning a Commonwealth scholarship, Shah studied MSc in Water & Environmental Engineering at the University of Surrey in the UK.[2]

Professional career[edit]

Shah is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers.[2] Prior to becoming President of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Shah has served on the Thomas Telford board, the ICE Executive Board, ICE's Fairness, Inclusion and Respect panel, the ICE research and development panel and the ICE qualifications panel.[4]

Shah specialised in Water & Environmental Engineering and has over 20 years’ experience in designing, managing and leading projects and programmes both in the UK and internationally[5]. Shah is also a senior director for resilient cities and the UK climate adaptation lead at Arcadis.[6] Shah is currently seconded to Effiage, Kier, Ferrovial and BAM Nuttal joint venture on High Speed 2 as Senior Director of Environmental Consents[7].

Shah is a non-executive director of the Met Office, UK [8] and a Green Alliance trustee[9]. Shah represents Arcadis at the London Climate Change Partnership and 50L Home Initiative of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development[5]. Shah is the past Chair of the Thames Estuary Partnership Board, which works towards sustainable management of the River Thames[5]. Shah has been a chair and also a judge of the OFWAT Water breakthrough Innovation fund for two consecutive terms[5][7].

In 2021, Shah was made an honorary professor by the University of Wolverhampton for knowledge transfer.[10] In the same year, Shah was honored with an honorary doctorate from the University of East London for Shah's contributions to climate change in engineering.[3] Shah is a visiting professor at the University of Edinburgh[11][12] and is a Royal Academy of Engineering visiting professor at King's College London.[6]

Awards[edit]

Shah has won a number of awards including the Civil Engineering Contractors Association Fairness Inclusion and Respect Inspiring Engineers Award 2019 [4] and being selected by the Women's Engineering Society as one the UK's Top 50 Women in Sustainability.[13] Shah was also named as one of Climate Reframe's leading BAME voices on climate change in the UK[7].
