Draft:Alvin Tedjo

  • Comment: Mississauga's city council is not a level of political office at which a person is automatically entitled to have a Wikipedia article just for serving on it -- it's a level of office at which he would have to show a lot more media coverage about him and his work than this draft is citing. Alvin Tedjo is a Canadian politician in Mississauga, Ontario. He is the current Mississauga City Councillor for Ward 2, which includes the neighbourhoods of Park Royal, Clarkson and Lorne Park since his election on October 24, 2022.[1] Prior to his election, Tedjo served as the director of Government Relations for Sheridan College and was a political staffer to various ministers at the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities[2], and served as a political panelist on CP24[3].

Background and personal life[edit]

The son of Indonesian immigrants, Tedjo was raised in Mississauga, attending Father Michael Goetz Secondary School and serving on longtime mayor Hazel McCallion's youth advisory committee, being awarded Mississauga Youth Citizen of the Year in 1998.[4] Tedjo worked for the City of Mississauga for 15 years as a lifeguard, heading the Mississauga Lifesaving Club and competing in provincial lifesaving competitions, as well as a training and development consultant to the City.[1] During his time as a competitive lifeguard, Alvin met his wife Rebecca, with whom he has three children, and lives in the Sheridan Homelands neighbourhood of Mississauga.[2] Alvin also represented the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance as Director of Communications previously to entering politics.[3]

Municipal politics[edit]

Tedjo ran for Mississauga City Council in 2014 in his home district of Ward 2, running on a platform of pushing for a rapid transit line on Dundas, better syncing up GO Train and MiWay transit times, renewing municipal public spaces including parks, playgrounds and paths, and protecting Mississauga's waterfront.[4] Tedjo finished in third place in this election, earning 2,310 votes with Karen Ras winning the vote.[5]

Tedjo again ran for Ward 2 Councillor in 2022, with outgoing Councillor Ras speaking positively of Tedjo's candidacy commenting, “there's one particular candidate people should be looking at and that's Alvin Tedjo. You want values-based decision-making about what's right for the city and region.”[6] Tedjo was successful in this election, winning over 40% of the vote.[7]

As Councillor, Tedjo put forward a motion in October 2023 calling on the City to consider fourplexes throughout city increase housing supply and bolster Mississauga's application for the additional housing funding from the federal government.[8] While the motion was initially defeated in a tie vote at City Council, Mayor Bonnie Crombie used newly granted strong mayor powers to override the deadlocked Council, directing staff in the Planning & Building Department to prepare an official plan amendment and zoning by-law amendment that would permit development for up to four (4) residential units on low-rise residential lots in neighbourhoods City-wide.[5]

Tedjo declared as a candidate in January 2024[6] for the 2024 Mississauga mayoral by-election.

Provincial politics[edit]

Tedjo served as a policy advisor and staffer to numerous Ministers in the Government of Ontario, and was the Liberal candidate in Oakville North—Burlington[7] in 2018 and a candidate for the 2020 Ontario Liberal Party leadership election, placing fifth.[8]
