The 1983-84 season was the 85th season of competitive league football in the history of English football club Wolverhampton Wanderers. They played in the first tier of the English football system, the Football League First Division.

Season summary[edit]

Wolves had been promoted from the Second Division in the previous season under the management of former player Graham Hawkins finishing 2nd behind Queens Park Rangers.

Wolves were poorly equipped to handle the top flight after promised investment from the Bhatti brothers was not forthcoming following refusal of planning permission by the City of Wolverhampton Council

Despite drawing with Liverpool on the opening day of the season, Wolves started very poorly failing to win in their opening 14 games of the season, before beating local rivals West Bromwich Albion 3–1 away from home. Despite this Wolves sat bottom of the table in October and veteran striker Andy Gray left for Everton in November. Hawkins was eventually sacked as Wolves boss and the club were relegated following a 2–0 loss to Everton finishing 22nd with 29 points.
