125 Preservation is an England based railway heritage group who have preserved and operate a short InterCity 125.[1]

The operating vehicles are stored at the Nene Valley Railway and Railworld Wildlife Haven[1] near Peterborough in Cambridgeshire.

While a separate entity from the 125 Group and 125 Heritage, 125 Preservation closely collaborates and supports these other preservation groups as they all have similar preservation aims.

The first public running of 125 Preservation’s HST at Nene Valley Railway was the weekend of Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th July 2023.[2]

Operational Fleet details[3][edit]

125 Preservation are custodians of the following operating vehicles, which make up the short set which operates at the Nene Valley Railway:

- 43045 Class 43 power car “The Grammar School Doncaster AD1350”
- 40904 ex GWR TRFB buffet (originally 40001)
- 42355 ex LNER TS (originally British Rail Class 252 12000, later 42000)
- 42357 ex LNER TS (originally British Rail Class 252 11003, later 41002)
- 43060 Class 43 power car “County of Leicestershire”

43045 and 43060, both Paxman VP185 engined power cars, were saved for preservation in 2022[4] and were moved by road from storage at Long Marston to the Nene Valley Railway on the 10th and 11th January 2023, before moving under their own power to their new home at the Railworld site on the 29th January 2023.

43045 and 43060 were last operated on the Midland Mainline by EMR before spending a short period working for Colas Rail Freight, before being stored[4]. Both power cars presently carry the EMR livery.

40904, the first built production HST buffet car which was originally numbered 40001, was moved by road from Long Marston to the Nene Valley Railway on the 10th January 2023. 40904 is still in the branded GWR green livery.[4]

Mk3 42357 arrived from storage in Ely on the 12th January 2023 and 42355 from the same location a day later on the 13th January 2023[4]. Both previously operated with LNER prior to retirement from mainline duties, and are still painted in the Virgin East Coast / LNER livery, although now unbranded.

Other Fleet details[edit]

125 Preservation are also custodians of the following vehicles[3], which are ultimately intended to join the short set:

- 40711 ex LNER TRFB buffet, which is currently stored at a private location.

- 41095 ex LNER TF buffet, which is currently stored at a private location.

- E10731 Mk3 sleeping carriage, which is used as an accommodation space for 125 Preservation volunteers. It lives at Overton station at the Nene Valley Railway, and is painted in BR blue and grey.

- 77382 driving trailer (A end) of a Wessex Electric Class 442, from the first built set 442401. This is currently stored at Eastleigh works. It is planned that 77382 will be rewired to "talk" HST and will be able to be propelled by a Class 43 powercar.

- 42356 GWR TS. Originally Class 252 Prototype 12003, later 42002. Currently stored at Eastleigh Works and is being slowly returned to operating condition. It is planned that 42356 will be loaned to the 125 Group as this vehicle is a disabled standard carriage aligned to current accessibility standards.

- 42353 GWR TS. Originally Class 252 Prototype 12002 later 42001. Currently stored unserviceable due to previous components recover, at a private location and will be returned to an operating condition in due course.
