Core Laboratories N.V. is a provider of proprietary and patented reservoir description and production enhancement services and products in the petroleum industry.

Background[edit]

Core Lab provides its services to the world’s major, national and independent oil companies.[2] The company is a publicly traded company on NYSE under the symbol "CLB" since July 10, 1998 [3] and on Euronext Amsterdam since May 16, 2012.[4] It is classified in the GCIS Sub-Industry: Oil & Gas Equipment & Services.[5] The company markets and sells its products through a combination of sales representatives, technical seminars, trade shows, and print advertising, as well as through distributors.[6] The Company has over 70 offices in more than 50 countries and is located in every major oil-producing province in the world.

Core Laboratories engages in the provision of proprietary and patented reservoir description, production enhancement and reservoir management services to the oil and gas industry.[7] It operates through three segments: Reservoir Description, and Production Enhancement.[7]

The Reservoir Description segment includes the characterization of petroleum reservoir rock and reservoir fluid samples to enhance production and improve recovery of crude oil and gas from its clients' reservoirs. [6] It offers laboratory-based analytical and field services to characterize properties of crude oil and oil delivered products; and proprietary and joint industry studies, as well as services that support carbon capture, utilization and storage, geothermal projects, and the evaluation and appraisal of mining activities[6].

The Production Enhancement segment provides services and products relating to reservoir well completions, perforations, stimulations, production, and well abandonment.[6] It offers integrated diagnostic services to evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of well completions and to develop solutions to improve the effectiveness of enhanced oil recovery projects.[6]

In 2023 the company announced its collaboration with Halliburton in the U.S. to compress the delivery time of cutting-edge comprehensive digital rock data solutions from months to weeks, even while full petrophysical laboratory measurements are in progress.[8] This collaboration combines Core Lab's industry-leading expertise in reservoir description and optimization technologies with Halliburton's specialization in pore-scale digital rock analysis.[8] The integration allows U.S. clients to run pore-scale simulations simultaneously with physical laboratory experiments, revolutionizing the accuracy and innovation of digital rock characterization workflows.[8]

In 2021 Core Lab began a partnership with the University of Houston to bolster the school's geologic education. Using Core Lab's RapidZoom™ technology students are able to see what rock sample looks like at high-magnification[9]. The company's RapidZoom™ technology is a web-enabled tool, developed to visualize ultra-high resolution images.[9] Features of the tool include pan and zoom across an entire image with dynamic scaling, on-screen measurements, annotations, image descriptions, screen capture and image rotation.[9]
