Renaming Categories for Years in the European Union before 1993[edit]

The current category proposal is to rename “years by” Category:1992 in the European Union (and earlier; they are back to 1972 at present) to Category:1992 in the European Economic Community, as the EEC only became the EU in 1993. This could be done with some work, although making navigation to earlier years less convenient. Some pages like Elections in the European Union which refer to elections back to 1979 should logically also be modified. The main “Years in” category is a subcategory of the Category:History of the European Union.

NB: see previous discussion via notice on Category:1992 in the European Union.

I suggested that for countries the practice is to usually keep the current name and refer to events in the current area in the previous years series; though with some exceptions eg Category:1945 in the Soviet Union. Similarly Category:1774 in the Thirteen Colonies and for the 18th century Category:1745 in Great Britain.

But my reference to the early years of Australia, Canada and South Africa before 1901, 1867 & 1910 resulted in replies that they should be renamed too, often without suggesting what they could be called. The “years in” for these federations go back to long before they were legally recognised entities (1788, 1700 and 1795 respectively), and before some of the constituent colonies too. Should we consider a category called “1795 in the area that became South Africa” perhaps? Or keep "1795 in South Africa" as has been proposed as logical. And keep "1788 in Australia" too?

In addition, creating a separate series for Years in Newfoundland from 1867 (and earlier?) to 1948 or 1949 will result in a sparse and difficult to navigate series. Newfoundland only joined Canada in 1949; with the Dominion of Newfoundland becoming the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

While there is a Category:Years in the Thirteen Colonies for the USA before 1776 this is an artificial not a legal name for 13 colonies that became the USA, and goes back to years when there were less than 13 colonies; from 1609 to 1775.

Re Eastern Europe, Poland goes back to the 10th century for “Years in” but as a country disappears altogether in the late 19th century. And in 1946 Poland gained territory in the West from Germany, but lost territory in the East to Belarus, Lithuania (?) and the Ukraine. Hugo999 (talk) 02:57, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
