Hi -

The following cats:

all have a fair amount of overlap, both in sub-categories and in the articles included. While I realize these three concepts are not the same, I'm wondering if there is a better structure or better descriptions we can use for these three categories - also should one be nested within the other somehow? --KarlB (talk) 22:27, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

They do, however there is a particular problem with "Nationalism in the UK". The BNP and the National Front do not belong in the same category as Plaid Cymru and the SNP. Those are two very different kinds of "nationalism".

As "nationalism" in the UK more commonly means the the Plaid Cymru type of nationalism rather than the National Front kind of nationalism, I suggest moving those to Category:Far-right politics in the United Kingdom‎ adding adding hat note to Category:Nationalism in the United Kingdom advising that parties to do with the far-right are in Category:Far-right politics in the United Kingdom‎.

All of these categories are different enough to exit IMO, but the whole lot seem to be lacking discipline in categorisation. For examples, I'm surprised Category:Devolution in the United Kingdom isn't a top-level category (it's inside Category:Home rule in the United Kingdom, which seems a bit antiquated) and the Plaid and SNP are inside the Home Rule category, as well as the Nationalism in the UK category, which all seems a bit muddled. I'd suggest instead that the Nationalism in the UK cat be a sub cat of Devolution and Secession as well as being a top-level cat of its own.

I agree, it's messed up - but the issue is, both are regularly described as nationalism (see this for how they self-describe: http://www.natfront.co.uk/). It's the same reason British nationalism ends up next to Welsh nationalism even though they have quite different goals; nationalists share a common philosophy that the nation should be whole and somewhat independent; what they differ on is the definition of the nation (the Welsh may say it's Welsh people, the National Front will say it's white British people, etc.) You could put National Front in Category:Far-right politics in the United Kingdom‎, but then that should be a subcat of Category:Nationalism in the United Kingdom (I note that fascism already is). But you're right the rest is a muddle. My gut feeling was actually to put Nationalism as the top-level category, because it is that feeling of national identity of one sort or another that seems to be a unifying factor - then all of the various nationalist country cats could be placed there. Then, Secession, Home Rule, and Devolution could be child-cats, and mainly contain articles (vs duplicated categories) which outline various efforts to gain more independence through those mechanisms. I think the issue is we're dealing with a continuum of political thought, so categorization is always tricky... --KarlB (talk) 20:52, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
