Certain NPS sites as subcategories[edit]

After adding a few stubs for various National Park Service sites, I began to notice that many of them became listed on the National Register on the same day: October 15, 1966 -- this seemed to indicate a general policy. After checking the National Register webpage I found out that all historic areas of the National Park System are automatically listed on the Register. Therefore, I made the categories for National Historical Parks, National Historic Sites, National Military Parks (including similar designations), and National Memorials subcategories here. But there are a couple minor problems with this:

A few Congressionally authorized memorials and historic sites are "affiliated areas" of the NPS, and are not necessary listed on the Register. My solution to this is to note the fact on the individual pages (for example: Father Marquette National Memorial).
There are NPS historic sites that are designated as National Monuments, but that designation is also used for non-historic (i.e. natural) areas, and many monuments are administered by agencies other than the NPS. So I did not attempt to set that as a subcategory of the register. So they need to be added to the main National Register category individually, rather than as a group (example: Casa Grande Ruins National Monument). Likewise other types of parks are occasionally listed on the register (example: Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway).

I plan to go through this category, and remove individual Nat'l Memorials, Historic Sites/Parks, and Military Parks.

Moving articles to state categories[edit]

The spirit moved me today to start moving some of the articles out of this main category and into the relatively new state/territory sub categories.

I think that all articles should be so moved, except for square pegs like American Legation (in Morocco) and U.S. Routes / Parkways that are in more than a couple states.

Recommendation to use List of Registered Historic Places by State, or County, State[edit]

This category leaves out that it is a National designation. I've noticed there is a category for State Heritage Area. To classify a village as falling into the category - List of Registered Historic Places, New York, for instance, makes it seem as if the category may be only state or local. Maybe the category should be renamed: List of Registered National Historic Places by State, or by County, State. --Parkwells 16:59, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

De-listed properties[edit]

I cannot identify a category on the top level or in the larger states' levels that alludes to properties formerly listed on the NRHP. Can anybody help me locate said precedent? I am thinking specifically of the former Jobbers Canyon Historic District in Omaha, but I know there are others out there. Thanks. • Freechild'sup? 19:44, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NRHP Search System[edit]

A while back, the NRHP overhauled their web search and introduced a new system at http://focus.nps.gov. The old URL, http://www.nr.nps.gov, no longer works. This leaves us with a ton of articles which have a broken reference. I've already gone through all the ones for Cincinnati, Ohio and replaced those links (using AWB), but there are far too many articles for one person to fix them all. Is there a way we could get a bot to go through and fix the links? Oldiesmann (talk) 06:08, 5 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No. It is disingenuous to change links like this: nr.nps.gov was consulted as the source, not Focus; we must cite the source that we use. Of course, if the Focus website had all of the relevant information, it would be fine, but it doesn't yet have a complete downloadable database like the one from which these articles were developed, so it's not a valid source for much of the information on here.
