Delete this category[edit]

This is another category so broad and so general that it is irrelevant. Literally tens of millions of French citizens have German descent and German ancestors. (About 35% of Americans - more than 100 million people - claim German descent, as well.) - Similar ridiculously broad Categories about French people have already been deleted en.Wikipedia, including "List of French Catholics", "List of French Protestants", etc., etc. This Category should be deleted, too. I second that. Is there some sort of agenda behind this list? Several of the people in it have several other kinds of descent, whether the person who crafted this list likes it or not. Feketekave (talk) 00:49, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's a subcategory of "Category:French people by ethnic or national origin". Do you want to delete all these cats or only the "..of German descent"? 84.139.240.8 (talk) 09:07, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Most of them are similarly non-sensical and most of them are almost empty. The undertones that such a list carries with itself are simply somewhat clearer now, due, of course, to German history, and to a tendency in classical German nationalist discourse to define nationality in terms of blood. The basic issue in the background is still probably there in other categories of the same kind, though. Feketekave (talk) 22:18, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You should take that to a general discussion as we have long established categories on Category:People by ethnic or national descent, not only for Germans. 84.139.245.108 (talk) 09:12, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Individual categories of this nature have been deleted in the past. But yes, it would be good to have both a discussion of this category and a general discussion. Where do you think the latter could take place? Also - you have shown exactly what the matter is by speaking of "Germans", rather than "people of German descent".
