We need this category principally to handle proprietary email systems whose origins predate the origin of Internet email. In Internet email, the client and server software is clearly distinguished. By contrast, in most pre-Internet email systems (e.g. 1980s mainframe and LAN-based systems), the client and server software came in the same package and there was no clear distinction between them. Existing categories such as Category:Email clients and Category:Message transfer agents don't work for those systems since, even though they often had components comparable to MTAs and clients, we are not going to have separate articles on each of those components, since the system was sold/installed/configured/used as a whole.
