Medieval civilizations[edit]

I created a category for medieval civilizations that was deleted. The closed discussion is here. The main rational was the lack of word “civilization” in all page titles except two. For example, Christendom was disqualified as civilization because it is not titled “Christendom civilization.”

As a result of the deletion, a gap opened between Category:Classical civilizations and Category:Modern civilizations, a millennium-long period with many notable civilizations.

It is said in deletion guidelines: “Consensus is not determined by counting heads, but by looking at strength of argument and cited recorded consensus.” There were not any strong arguments favoring deletion. There were two participants in the discussion and one argument which is not “delete per nom.” The only other argument said that the medieval civilization “seems odd.” Arguments used to be stronger.

Despite this progress of discussion, it was closed and the category deleted in the shortest possible time.

Seeing the level of the discussion, I contacted several Wikipedians interested in the Middle Ages asking to participate in the discussion but was immediately warned of “canvassing.”

Thus no Wikipedian with historical education participated. The very nomination for deletion was made by Marcocapelle (talk) - a person with doubtful knowledge of history. He called Christendom and the medieval Japan “single countries” (October 29 in the discussion) and claimed that the Indus civilization was neither dynasty nor empire. (How does he know? Did he decipher the Harappan script?)

The bottom line, the Category:Civilizations by time looks incomplete without the medieval subcategory.--Maxaxa (talk) 00:42, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Maxaxax: Procedural oppose, if you want to have a category deleted you should follow the steps as outlined in WP:CFD. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:41, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Substantive oppose, the fact that Category:Civilizations by time does not have a medieval subcategory is not a reason to delete it. It does have subcategories by time, and that is all that matters.

Above, Maxaxax also puts forward a large number of misunderstandings or incorrect claims, but I will respond on that when this category will be formally nominated at CFD. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:41, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Post-classical[edit]

Categories for Post-classical and Modern civilizations were deleted per consensus at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 April 25#Category:Post-classical civilizations. – Fayenatic London 08:51, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
