category merger with prizes[edit]

The categories Category:Awards and Category:Prizes seem to be used indistinguishably from each other, and they are circularly categorized (i.e., awards is a subcat of prizes, and prizes is a subcat of awards). Technically, I would think "awards" is the more generic term; prizes is a particular type of award with a prize, usually of cash. But at least as currently used in wp, I think there is little distinction. What do folks think about merging all the "prizes" into "awards"? Is there something I'm missing or some better way to handle this? (x-posted at Category talk:Prizes) --LQ 21:35, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Relatedly, the categories Category:Award winners, Category:Prize winners, and Category:Recipients of formal honors, need cleaning up. Whatever we end up doing with awards / prizes categories, these three categories should be cleaned up in parallel. Plus, there is confusion between the categories--sometimes an award is itself listed under the "*winners" category (see, e.g., James Craig Watson Medal). --LQ 21:42, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • CFD merged both categories. --lquilter 06:41, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

project, standards[edit]

The awards category continues to have problems; I'm going to list them here as a reasonable coordination for all the pages of the category. Problems that I see include:

  1. No standards for notability of awards - while WP:N applies, it doesn't seem to be consistently applied in this area. Does that existing practice suggest that there is a reason to have a different standard of notability here? Or simply that there has been little review of these pages?
  2. Categorization - I've been working on these for a while.
  3. Standard content - What should an awards page have?
  4. Standard naming conventions

I have no idea what #2 refers to, but 1, 3, and 4 are all matters for a Wiki-project, and not for this Cat. I suggest that the preceding contrib be struck thru (tho that should await the arrival of a second, concurring opinion), and considered superceded by the following:

The awards category continues to have problems that a WikiProject Awards could come to grips with. User:Lquilter listed them here, 2.5 years ago:

  1. No standards for notability of awards - while WP:N applies, it doesn't seem to be consistently applied in this area. Does that existing practice suggest that there is a reason to have a different standard of notability here? Or simply that there has been little review of these pages?
  2. Standard content - What should an awards page have?
  3. Standard naming conventions

They were also concerned about "Categorization". That suggests to me matters such as what hierarchy should exist below the accompanying Cat, which are indeed appropriate for discussion on this talk page, but await the statement of specifics.
