Novels set in Historical America vs American Historical novels[edit]

I expected to find novels here that feature American History. Instead, the category appears to include historical novels by American writers. I'd like to see both. WCCasey (talk) 07:29, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I put the for statement at the top, unfortunately many of the historical novels available have not been sorted. That would be a great project for you? Right now I am tackling Category:American novels, :)Sadads (talk) 11:08, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The "for" statement is a big help - thanks! As a fan of "Novels set in Historical America", I may indeed work on expanding the category. WCCasey (talk) 17:38, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What's publishing got to do with it?[edit]

Regarding recent edits to the category intro: why include publishing at all? The category title says nothing about where a novel is published. WCCasey (talk) 19:29, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I made the edit, but only because I was trying to preserve the sense of the original sentence. The category could go either way: only books by American writers or also books published by American publishers. I've seen that latter criteria used for some American literary awards--you don't have to be a citizen to qualify, as long as the publisher was in the USA. But I don't know if this category is meant to be only about the author. Or, as you noted above, whether it's more about the setting than either the author or publisher.... You could take it up at the main Novels project page--more people will see your question there. Best, Aristophanes68 (talk) 04:04, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I was modifying the wording as well to keep original intention, but I think the gist of the Novels conversation was that the actual nationality is more important. My thought was. however, as for the publishing, how else do you determine if an author is really an immigrant to the US, i.e. English Born, but writing from the perspective of the US? Biographical information on authors is not that hard to find. I would never think of using Wikipedia categories for that purpose. WCCasey (talk) 05:29, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
